Jellyfish life cycle

Jellyfish have two separate life stages: the asexual bottom-dwelling polyp, and the sexual free-swimming medusa. Each jellyfish is one sex or the other, and free-spawns its eggs or sperm into the water where it becomes fertilized. They develop into free-swimming larvae that eventually attach to the bottom and grow into polyps. The polyp asexually buds off a new young medusa (an ephrya) which grows and matures into a jellyfish over a period of months.
